Many ill-thought out wars start with the conviction that it will all be over by Christmas.

The killing has a nasty tendency to go on for a lot longer and the consequences are rarely in line with the naïve hopes of those who launched them.

Nearly one million Russian soldiers have been killed or injured in Putin’s special military operation and after four years of conflict the damage is getting worse.
