"Stop arming Israel": People protest outside Schumer, Gillibrand's office to block US weapons sale

Global News Global News —

More than 300 protesters gathered outside the Manhattan offices of U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand on Monday, calling on them to support an expected Senate vote to block additional U.S. weapons sales to Israel.

Demonstrators sat outside the senators' offices before moving into Third Avenue, where police repeatedly warned them to leave the roadway or face arrest on disorderly conduct charges.

Police later detained multiple protesters with zip ties and carried some from the street.

Before the protest, Jewish Voice for Peace spokesperson Sonya Meyerson-Knox said, "New Yorkers are here to say, 'Stop arming Israel.'"

Referring to Lebanon, Meyerson-Knox said, "This is a campaign of ethnic cleansing across southern Lebanon," and said it was "unacceptable" that it was being carried out "with our weapons" and U.S. taxpayer money.
