Peru's defense and foreign ministers quit over stalled purchase of US military jets
Peru's defense and foreign ministers have resigned after the country's president stalled a $3.5 billion deal for U.S. F-16 fighter jets.
Interim President José María Balcázar had said on Wednesday that he deferred the decision to his successor, citing a lack of legitimacy to make such a commitment.
His transitional government, which began in February, is set to end in July.
Peru is holding a presidential runoff on June 7.
U.S. Ambassador Bernie Navarro warned on X that Peru's actions could undermine U.S. interests.
After stepping down as defense minister, Carlos Díaz expressed concerns that delaying the purchase could harm Peru.
Details of the deal remain classified.
