Sweden's secondhand fashion swaps aim to cut environmental waste

Thousands of people have attended Sweden’s annual clothing swap events across the Scandinavian country.

On Sunday, participants looked for pre-loved looks or repaired their own with the help of tailors.

The initiative began in 2010 and has grown amid ongoing challenges in the country’s textile recycling system.

Last year, some 140,000 people participated in 140 swap events across the country and took home more than 44,000 pre-owned items.

The UN Environment Programme cites fast fashion as major player in environmental damage.

Sweden is often seen as environmentally advanced, but the reality is more nuanced.
