A government report reveals that a 2021 midair collision of two South Korean fighter jets occurred because a pilot made an abrupt maneuver to improve video angles.
The Board of Audit and Inspection said Wednesday the pilot must pay about $59,340 to compensate for the damage.
The pilot first filmed himself during his final flight with his unit.
He suddenly banked his jet so that fellow pilots in the other jet could take better video of him.
He did so without consulting the other pilots, leading to the collision.
Both jets returned safely.
South Korea’s air force apologized Thursday and said the pilot was disciplined.
