Canadian government officials will mark the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ont., to Detroit, Mich., on Friday, without the U.S., after President Donald Trump threatened steep new tariffs on Canada.
The bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on July 27 under a revenue-sharing agreement with the United States that was struck after Trump delayed the opening by more than a month.
In a statement, Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said a joint celebration between the two countries would be "inappropriate in light of trade action threatened by the United States."
Robertson will be joined by other federal and provincial officials for the Canada-only ceremony.
