President Trump on Thursday said the U.S. and Iran have reached a deal, "subject to finalization of documents," hours after calling off further U.S. strikes on the country.
"We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran," he told reporters in the Oval Office. "It should be done pretty quickly."
The president said the Strait of Hormuz would reopen as soon as the deal is signed, which he said could happen as soon as this weekend in Europe.
"They want it every bit as much as everybody wants it," the president said of Iran.
His remarks in the Oval Office followed his declaration earlier in the day that he had canceled forthcoming strikes on Iran, which would have marked a third day of attacks intended to get Tehran to agree to terms.
"Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening," he wrote on social media.
"Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others.
The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly."
