Daniel Vallejo criticizes female umpire after French Open loss

Associated Press Associated Press

Daniel Vallejo of Paraguay says his French Open match against Moise Kouame should not have been umpired by a woman.

Vallejo lost a tense five-set battle against the French teenager on Thursday.

He's told Clay magazine that such matches need male umpires due to the demanding crowd.

Vallejo criticized Brazilian umpire Ana Carvalho for not being severe enough with the boisterous French crowd.

He also accused Kouame of stalling during the match.

Vallejo says the intense atmosphere didn’t harm him but strengthened his opponent.

French Open organizers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
