Lois Romano on Lincoln-Douglas Debates: "The debates are interesting because Lincoln proposed them, because when he was running against, Douglas previously, he was chasing him around the state.
So Douglas would make a speech and then Lincoln would make a speech.
But Lincoln was always sort of an add on.
And he said, I don't want to do that again.
So he proposes these debates to Douglas, and Douglas didn't want to do them because he knew that Lincoln was a really good orator.
I think history would say, that Lincoln won the debates, but Douglas was had a lot more money and was a very good candidate and had stature.
And Lincoln didn't have stature."
