Lebanon and Israel hold first direct talks in decades amid push for broader deal

Al Jazeera Al Jazeera —

Lebanon and Israel have held their first direct diplomatic contact in more than three decades, in what officials described as a preliminary meeting aimed at laying the groundwork for future negotiations.
The talks, held at ambassadorial level, were chaired by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who described the moment as a “historic opportunity” to address decades of conflict and regional tensions.

He stressed that discussions go beyond a ceasefire, pointing to broader goals including reducing Hezbollah’s influence and addressing long-standing instability.

Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna reports.
