C-SPAN's "America's Book Club" — Lois Romano, a journalist and author, spoke about the 1858 Lincoln–Douglas debates, which helped propel Abraham Lincoln into the national spotlight despite his loss to Stephen Douglas in the U.S. Senate race.

"The debates did him a lot of good.

They made him a national figure," she said. "He was currying so much favor with those debates that he became the premier politician in the state of Illinois and then he began traveling all around the country."
