South Africa's Democratic Alliance has elected Geordin Hill-Lewis as its new leader.
Hill-Lewis, currently Cape Town's mayor, was chosen at the party's federal congress in Johannesburg on Sunday.
His election comes as support for opposition parties rises and the African National Congress' appeal wanes.
The ANC has governed since 1994, but lost its parliamentary majority in the 2024 elections, leading to a coalition with the Democratic Alliance.
Hill-Lewis defended the coalition but emphasized the party's ambition to lead the national government.
He highlighted the party's success in local governance as a model for national leadership.
