Orbán's rural base still backs the Hungarian leader ahead of Sunday’s election

Days before a pivotal election, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán faces an unusually strong challenge from center-right rival Péter Magyar, whose Tisza party has gained support amid economic stagnation and frozen EU funds.

Yet Orbán retains deep loyalty among many voters, especially older people and residents of small towns.

In Cegléd, entrepreneur István Vároczi said Orbán’s Fidesz is “the only party I trust,” praising the leader’s authenticity and long record.

Polls show Fidesz still leading among voters over 65 and strong in smaller communities.

Supporters credit Orbán’s social programs and national rhetoric while blaming external factors such as the war in Ukraine for Hungary’s sluggish economy.
