Belfast woke to scenes of devastation after a night of violent disorder saw homes, cars and a bus set on fire, forcing residents to flee as emergency services responded across the city.

Masked groups gathered in several areas following Monday night’s serious knife attack in north Belfast.

Police appealed for calm as officers dealt with sporadic unrest and political leaders condemned the destruction.

A 30-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article and making threats to kill in connection with the original attack.
