Thousands of Arsenal fans lined the streets of north London as the club celebrated their Premier League title triumph with a trophy parade near the Emirates Stadium.
It was not to be last night for Mikel Arteta’s men, left to rue a cruel ending to a Champions League final of fine margins as Paris Saint-Germain claimed back-to-back European crowns.
Gabriel Magalhaes sent his spot-kick over the bar after a tense shootout settled a tight contest in Budapest, with PSG emerging 4-3 victors on penalties after extra time.
It was a result, and performance, from which Arsenal could take both encouragement and insight into where improvement is needed.
Arteta and his squad were to pick up the pieces on a day of strange celebration.
There will be plenty of mixed emotions after last night’s near miss, but a first domestic success in 22 years is reason enough to celebrate before their World Cup contingent head off to their national teams.
