The Irish Independent’s View: Fianna Fáil’s 100-year contribution has certainly been considerable
La Scala Theatre had a lot of symbolism attached to it.
Named after the historic grand opera house in Milan, the theatre was built in 1920 on the site of the Freeman’s Journal newspaper, a building which was badly damaged by the British forces bombardment of O’Connell Street during the 1916 Easter Rising.
The new venue on Princes Street, a sidestreet off O’Connell Street, had a restaurant, a cafe, a lounge bar and a ballroom, and could accommodate 1,900 people in the main auditorium.
