Police have issued a major update in the Ann Widdecombe murder investigation after a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the death of the 78-year-old former MP. The Chief Constable said officers had a suspect “firmly in custody” following an investigation that had moved at “lightning pace”.
Detectives remain open-minded about the motive but said there is currently nothing to suggest the killing was politically motivated or linked to terrorism.
Police also stressed that there is no information indicating a wider threat to the public and urged people not to engage with speculation online.
More than 120 reports have been submitted to the force’s major incident portal as officers continue their investigation and maintain a heightened presence in the local community.
The arrested man remains in police custody and has not been charged.
