Firefighters in France and Spain race to contain wildfires before new heatwave arrives

Firefighters in France and Spain are racing to contain wildfires before the arrival of another heatwave.

Authorities in the Gironde said the blaze there - which has so far razed 42,000 hectares - remained "stable" overnight.

But they ordered the evacuation of 4,000 people from campsites in the region this morning. 

Spain's Interior Minister said firefighters there had a "positive night" of progress in tackling fires around Madrid, but warned the next few hours would be "absolutely decisive".
