The U.S. Coast Guard says an airplane crew searching for a cargo vessel that went missing with six people on board near the U.S. territory of Saipan has spotted an overturned vessel but was unable to confirm whether it was the one that was lost.
The Coast Guard says it was seen early Saturday about 100 nautical miles northeast of the Mariana’s last known position.
The Mariana is a 145-foot dry cargo vessel registered in the U.S. It suffered engine failure Wednesday as a massive typhoon bore down on Saipan and nearby islands.
The Coast Guard says it does not know the crew members' nationalities.
