A Liberal Democrat-run council ordered the removal of a St George’s Cross flag from outside a flat before England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina.
Doorbell cam footage showed Portsmouth city council workers removing the national flag from the balcony outside an apartment on Tuesday.
In the video, one of the crew attempts to untie the flag from the balcony rail, which faces a car park in Portsmouth’s Charles Dickens ward, before a colleague takes a knife from his bag and cuts it down.
The move drew criticism from Reform UK councillors and MPs including Suella Braverman, who labelled the decision to remove the flag “ridiculous”.
The move also appears at odds with the Government’s approach on England flags during the World Cup, after St George’s Cross flags and bunting were hung outside No 10 Downing Street on Monday.
