Mali holds funeral for former defense minister killed in insurgent attacks
Mali's former defense minister Gen. Sadio Camara, who played a key role in the country's shift toward Russia, was buried in a ceremony broadcast on state television.
Camara, who was instrumental in the 2020 coup and the subsequent deployment of Russian mercenaries, was killed at the weekend during a militant attack.
His death leaves a significant void in Mali's security leadership and comes amid tensions over the loss of territory to insurgent groups, which has frustrated both the Malian leadership and population.
The future of Mali's military strategy and alliances, including its relationship with Russia, remains uncertain.
