President Trump on Tuesday defended his decision to impose additional 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products, saying the country has treated the U.S. "very tough" for decades.

"Canada has been very, very tough on us over the years, for many years, and no other president's done anything about it," he told reporters in the Oval Office.

"I mean, in all fairness to them, they need us to survive.

Without us, there's no way they can survive.

But they've been very, very tough over the period of the last 50 years, actually."

The president said the tariffs announced Monday were separate from other levies he's considering imposing on Canada over the wildfire smoke that has drifted into the U.S.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters Tuesday that he had spoken with President Trump earlier in the day.

"We agreed to intensify negotiations in the coming weeks, and the team and myself look forward to doing that," he said.
