The family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu is appealing a court ruling to have his remains buried in South Africa.
Nearly a year after his June 5 death, Lungu’s body remains unburied due to a dispute between his family and his successor.
In August 2025, the Pretoria High Court allowed the Zambian government to return his body for a state funeral.
On Friday, the Lungu family approached South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal, arguing the ruling misinterpreted facts and ignored their objections to President Hakainde Hichilema attending the funeral.
The family insists on a private burial in Johannesburg.
