U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio led the start of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.
The talks come as the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict is proving to be a hurdle in a wider ceasefire with Iran, which says any peace negotiations must include both Hezbollah and Lebanon.
“I don't think the Israelis expect a very concrete result in the field from these peace talks,” Dorothy Schmid from the French Institute of International Relations said. “Apparently the Israelis accepted these talks only under very strong pressure from the United States, who don't want the ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon to derail the diplomatic process with Iran,” she added.
As Global’s Reggie Cecchini reports, these talks could become critical for the U.S. to reestablish global economic stability.
