Asked on Thursday about the delay of opening the newly built Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ont., and Detroit Mich.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said, “at the request of the United States we agreed to delay the opening… to resolve outstanding issues.” Carney added, “a question of a few weeks is time well spent.”
Asked what specifically is creating the delay, Carney said “A series of technical aspects, which we’ll work through with the United States.”
“Canada paid for the bridge… we ensured that the construction work and the activity associated with it, was shared with Michigan.
The benefits, of course, will be shared by all," he added.
“This is not a big drama,” the PM stated, downplaying any political aspect to the delay. “I would distinguish the two,” Carney said regarding any connection between the opening of the bridge and CUSMA trade discussions.
