US removes Syria off its list of state sponsors of terrorism

Turkey has welcomed a US decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The move rescinds a decades-old designation which came with severe economic consequences for Damascus.

Corresponding sanctions relief for Syria have also been announced.
