French President Emmanuel Macron has been hosting a crisis meeting over the huge uncontrolled wildfires that have forced more than 250,000 people to flee their homes.

In the Gironde region of southwest France, where flames have burned an area four times the size of Paris, the authorities said the situation overnight had remained “stable", a change from successive days where the fires raging since last week had edged closer to the city of Bordeaux.

The Gironde authorities have tried to keep tourists away and have banned holiday camps for children.
