Liberals “can’t control what’s happening in Iran,” but can in Canada: Tory, Bloc MPs on gas tax

Global News Global News —

MPs from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet faced critique from opposing Parliamentarians Monday, as the war in Iran continues to drive up fuel costs nationwide.

Speaking Monday during question period in the House of Commons, Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman said that suspending the federal fuel excise tax, clean fuel standard and GST surcharges on gas and diesel could save Canadians roughly 25 cents a litre.

Responding to Lantsman’s claim that the Carney government was turning “a bad situation into a tax grab,” Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne reminded her of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Bloc Québécois MP Gérard Deltell said, while the Liberals “can’t control what’s happening in Iran,” they can “control what's happening here.

“The government controls taxes – the Liberal carbon tax and gas tax… Abolish these taxes this year.

That's $5 billion of savings for Canadians,” Deltell said.
