Federal court blocks Alabama’s plan for new US House map
Federal judges have temporarily blocked Alabama’s plan to use new congressional districts that could help Republicans win an additional seat in the midterm elections.
A three-judge panel in the state’s long-running redistricting case issued the ruling Tuesday.
It blocks, at least temporarily, the state’s plan to use a different map in an Aug. 11 special primary.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund and other groups representing Black voters in the redistricting case sought the preliminary injunction.
They argued the court in 2023 had already found the state map was intentionally discriminatory against Black voters.
They also argued it was too close to the midterms to make changes.
