Migrants in Spain rush to legalize status under new amnesty program

Spain has launched a mass legalization measure for migrants, allowing them to apply for legal status starting on Monday.
It contrasts with other European countries that are tightening immigration controls.
The program, announced in January and finalized this month, offers a one-year renewable residence permit for those who have lived in Spain for five months and have a clean criminal record.
Applicants have until the end of June.
Spain's population now includes around 10 million foreign-born residents, many from Colombia, Venezuela, and Morocco.
Spain's government defends the measure as an economic one that has the support of business owners and unions.
