A South Korean national has been arrested in Tokyo for allegedly obstructing a spring festival at Yasukuni Shrine.

The shrine honors Japan’s war dead, including war criminals.

Many in China and the Koreas see visits to the shrine as showing a lack of remorse for Japan’s wartime actions.

The 64-year-old suspect held a banner with political messages, including one urging “war criminals” to stop praying at Yasukuni.

The incident occurred as vehicles carrying imperial messengers arrived to deliver offerings.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sent a religious ornament to the shrine, sparking criticism from China and South Korea.
