Sir Keir Starmer has warned that the UK must be prepared for war in order to deter potential enemies as he set out the Government’s long-delayed £15 billion Defence Investment Plan.
Speaking during a visit to Molloy Aeronautics in Berkshire, Sir Keir said Britain is facing a “more dangerous and volatile world” and argued that “the best way to avoid war is to prepare for it”.
The Prime Minister said foreign states are targeting the UK, while the war in Ukraine has shown how quickly modern conflict is changing.
Starmer acknowledged that some Government capital spending will be redirected to help fund defence, with certain road and energy projects no longer going ahead as planned.
The wider plan will take UK defence spending to almost £300 billion over the next four years, which Starmer described as a “huge historic shift” for the nation.
