EU will 'stand firmly' behind ICC chief as the US levies new sanctions

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday the EU would "stand firmly" behind the International Criminal Court after the US levied new sanctions against its president, Tomoko Akane, in a move the ICC called a "flagrant attack" on its independence.
