A former senior CIA official with top secret-level clearance is accused of stealing hundreds of gold bars worth more than $40 million from the federal government.
Federal court filings in Virginia show that David Rush was arrested and charged with criminal theft of public money last week.
An FBI affidavit says Rush requested and received a “significant quantity" of foreign currency and gold bars purportedly for work-related expenses.
Federal officials instead found more than 300 gold bars valued at more than $40 million, as well as about $2 million in cash in his home.
Rush remains in custody.
His lawyer declined to comment.
