Japan hit by 7.1 magnitude earthquake as PM warns of aftershocks

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu.

Officials warned of a tsunami earlier, which has now been withdrawn.

Former prime minister Fumio Kishida said people's lives are "the top priority" and warned of the possibility of strong aftershocks as seismic activity continues in the area.
