Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) pressed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday over how the Trump administration defines "winning" the Iran war, noting the conflict continues despite repeated administration claims that the U.S. had already won.
"I think the American people deserve a definition of what it means to win in Iran because this war has dragged out for a lot longer than certainly the president of the United States indicated," Sen. Van Hollen said.
"Militarily, Iran has been completely overmatched and crushed from the beginning.
Their capabilities are nowhere near ours," Secretary Hegseth replied, explaining what President Trump meant when he declared victory in March.
Sen. Van Hollen responded that nobody questioned the U.S.'s military superiority or its ability to destroy Iranian assets.
"The question to you is how are we going to define winning?" he asked.
Secretary Hegseth said the administration's overarching objective is "ensuring Iran never has a nuclear weapon."
"That's been clear from the president since day one," he said.
