OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma's deal to resolve thousands of lawsuits over the toll of opioids is taking effect Friday and the company is being replaced by a new entity.

The settlement wraps up one of the most complicated bankruptcy cases ever in the U.S. courts.

Other drugmakers, wholesalers pharmacies and other businesses have agreed to gradually pay out $50 billion.

Most of the money is to be used by government entities to fight the epidemic linked to 900,000 deaths since 1999.
