New Jersey Democrat Analilia Mejia was sworn into the House on Monday night, narrowing Republicans’ already slim majority.
She defeated Republican Joe Hathaway in last week’s special election in New Jersey’s 11th District to succeed former Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D), who was elected New Jersey governor last November.
The House now has 432 voting members: 217 Republicans, 214 Democrats and one independent who caucuses with Republicans.
There are three vacancies: California’s 1st and 14th Districts and Texas’s 23rd.
