US plans to file criminal charges against former Cuban president Raul Castro

The U.S. is moving to file criminal charges against former Cuban President Raul Castro over a deadly clash 30 years ago where two civilian planes were shot down for violating Cuban airspace.

This follows an extraordinary visit to Cuba on Thursday by CIA director John Ratcliffe and evolving protests by Cubans over power cuts and fuel shortages.

“Cuba is currently going through a grave crisis,” Miami resident and Cuban native Rigoberto Cordero said, “one where the only problem is that they (Cuban regime) refuse to leave the country.”

“The reason they must leave is so that the Cuban people may be free.” He added.

Meanwhile, some Cuban residents reject the charges outright.

Havana resident Ibrahim Escobar said, “he shouldn't be prosecuted because they violated Cuban territory, which they don't allow anywhere else.

It's the same as when they're sinking the boats involved in drug trafficking.

I don't think they know if those people are drug traffickers, because you can't see the people there, you can't see anything; all you see is the boat.”

At 94, Raul Castro is widely considered the most powerful person in Cuba, even though he stepped down as the leader of its communist party in 2021.
