It wasn’t exactly vintage sports commentary.
England’s match over Mexico finally offered me the chance to redeem myself.
After my Telegraph colleagues noticed my normally bookish demeanour in the office disintegrate when Harry Kane scored the winner in the previous game, they decided there was only one sensible course of action: wire me up to medical equipment “in the name of science” and send me to a pub.
As the son of parents who remember 1966 and (genuinely) haven’t missed an England match in a tournament for half a century, few things unsettle my nerves more than England in the knockouts.
Based on the last game, I feared it would be less Hand of God than Land of Nod: another slow game with England caught napping with their shaky defence as the country tried to stay awake.
Little did we know it would be a thriller of the greatest highs and lows from the very first whistle.
