Carney suspends federal gas tax next week

CTV News CTV News — 2min

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government will temporarily suspend the federal fuel excise tax starting next week to help lower costs for Canadians.

The measure will take effect April 20 and remain in place until early September, reducing gas prices by about 10 cents per litre and diesel by roughly 4 cents.

The government says the move is aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures as global factors continue to drive up fuel prices.

CTV's Katie Griffin reports the tax break is part of a broader effort to provide short-term relief for households and businesses facing rising energy costs.
