Dolly Parton, the rhinestones-to-riches daughter of Appalachia who for six decades ruled country music with an outsize personality and prairie wit that enshrined her as one of the 20th century’s most cherished American originals, died Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee.

She was 80.
