Ceuta calls for 'emergency' as hundreds of migrants swim into Spanish territory

Authorities in Ceuta are calling for a national emergency, after reports that 1,500 migrants entered the Spanish territory by sea in the last few days.

Footage appears to show hundreds of migrants swimming across the border from Morocco into the tiny Spanish enclave in North Africa.

The territory’s President, Juan Jesus Vivas, today called for “a situation of total humanitarian and social emergency” and said more than 200 people-a-day were entering Ceuta.

In a statement, Spain’s central government in Madrid said that several ministries were now "acting in coordination to respond with the utmost speed and efficiency to the situation in Ceuta".

Ceuta and Melilla, another Spanish autonomous city, are the EU’s only land borders with North Africa.

In 2021, there was a similar surge in migrants where 8,000 crossed in a few days.
