Deadly Ethnic Violence Flares Again in India’s Manipur State

Al Jazeera Al Jazeera — 2min

At least two people from the ethnic Kuki community have been killed in a fresh attack in India’s northeastern state of Manipur, according to local community groups.

The violence follows the discovery of six bodies belonging to members of another community who were abducted in May, further escalating tensions in a region already scarred by years of ethnic conflict.

Manipur has witnessed recurring clashes involving the Meitei, Kuki and Naga communities, driven by disputes over land rights, political representation and access to government jobs.

The latest violence has triggered protests, security operations and renewed fears of retaliation, as authorities struggle to contain instability that has displaced thousands and claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.
