Trump’s attempt to scrap US birthright citizenship rejected by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has struck down Donald Trump’s attempt to block automatic citizenship to newborn babies in the US.

In a 6-3 decision on Tuesday, July 1, the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s ‘dramatically revisionist’ attempt to define who gets to be a citizen.

Trump had tried to change the 14th amendment by executive order so that babies born in the US would be denied citizenship if their mother was “unlawfully present” or had “temporary” status at the time of the child’s birth.

Two conservative justices appointed by Trump, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh, joined liberal justices in rejecting the proposed change.
