California Lawmakers Seek Protections for Patients in ICE Custody
California lawmakers are pushing for stronger protections for detained immigrants in hospitals.
Two bills in the state Senate aim to prevent immigration officers from isolating patients and interfering with their legal help.
Both bills cite reporting by KFF Health News that found family members and attorneys have faced difficulty locating and supporting patients hospitalized while in immigration custody.
One bill would largely prohibit blackout policies that hide patients' locations.
Another would ensure staff inform families about patients' whereabouts.
The federal Department of Homeland Security didn't comment.
Supporters say more safeguards are needed.
Hospital representatives say the bills could create conflict and pose a safety risk for staff.
