Lithuania issues shelter order after drone triggers security alert

Al Jazeera Al Jazeera — 2min

Lithuania’s capital Vilnius temporarily closed its airport and issued a shelter-in-place warning after a drone was detected near its border with Belarus.
Residents, including members of parliament, were moved to shelters as security forces monitored the situation.
Authorities have not confirmed the drone’s origin, though tensions remain high along NATO’s eastern flank.
Lithuania’s defence minister said the incident reflects the growing threat from military drones in the region amid the war in Ukraine.
NATO has linked previous drone incidents in Baltic airspace to Russia’s war in Ukraine, while Moscow rejects the claims and accuses NATO of escalation.
The alliance says several drones entering Baltic and Nordic airspace in recent months were connected to Ukrainian operations against Russian targets.
The incident underscores rising fears of spillover from the war in Ukraine into neighbouring NATO countries.
