Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has told NBC News’ Meet the Press that he would not step down in his first interview with a U.S. network.
In a nearly five-minute clip broadcast Thursday that is part of a longer interview scheduled to air on Sunday, journalist Kristen Welker asked Díaz-Canel if he would be “willing to step down if it meant saving Cuba.” Díaz-Canel said leaders in Cuba are not elected by the U.S. government, and that he would respond only to the Cuban people.
The interview comes as tensions between Cuba and the U.S. remain high despite both sides acknowledging talks.
Díaz-Canel said the U.S. has “no moral to demand anything from Cuba.”
