Justice Amy Coney Barrett told lawmakers Tuesday that growing security threats against Supreme Court justices have taken a toll on their families, recalling how she had to explain to her 12-year-old why she was wearing a bulletproof vest.
"They have required โฆ my children to think about and see things that children should not have to see or think about," she said. "I didn't expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one."
Justices Barrett and Elena Kagan were testifying before a House Appropriations subcommittee on the Supreme Court's fiscal 2027 budget request, which seeks a 7% funding increase, largely for security.
