Rescuers have been attempting to find dozens of workers who are unaccounted for after a shopping centre partially collapsed and then exploded.
At least 50 people were injured, tens of thousands have been left without power.
The quake struck the southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto - where residents have been warned to stay on high alert for further seismic activity in the coming days.
